About Mrs. Maurer

Hello, friends and familes! I am thrilled to be a part of your educational experience. Hopefully, you will find this year to be full of laughs, love, and learning. I can't wait to learn alongside of you! Read on to find out more about me and our classroom.

I am originally from Evansville, Indiana. I attended Butler University in Indianapolis. Go Colts!

I moved to Virginia Beach after marrying my husband, Zachary. We have three energetic children; Abby (9), Brooklyn (7), and Colin (5). They will be attending 4th,  2nd, and K at John B. Dey. We also have another housemate, Toby, our black lab.

We moved back to the area last summer after spending two years in Alabama. We love the Beach and are super excited to be back!

I'm excited and just as nervous to start my 13th year of teaching as I was my first. I have taught grades K, 1, 2, and 5. I spent 8 years at Providence Elementary before moving to AL. For the two years in AL, I taught 5th grade at a magnet school in Dothan, Alabama. I taught 5th grade for two years at JBD. I am excited to be  in second and back for another year here at JBD!

I love music and having jam sessions. I especially enjoy listening to country music (maybe you guessed that as my dog is named after Toby Keith!). My family and I enjoy the outdoors and spend a majority of our weekends and evenings riding bikes and playing sports. I am a huge football fan! You will see me rocking my Colts and Ohio State gear during the fall. My other passions include shopping, reading, and laughing!

In Our Classroom

We respect each other.
We try
our best.
We are a team
We learn from mistakes
We create
We celebrate each other's success

Our Classroom Creed

I am a John B. Dey student.
I have great expectations for myself.
I accept the challenge to become the best that I can be.

Yesterday's failures are behind me.
Today's successes are now before me.
I will make today the very best day of all, For this day begins the rest of my life.

I accept the responsibility for my behavior and its results.
I do not have the right to interfere with the learning and well being of others.

With my family and teachers,
I will determine what I will become,
For the education I receive today will make me a leader of tomorrow.

Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right.

Homework Policy

In light of recent research, I am not going to be putting a huge emphasis on homework. The grade level will be sending home choice board grids for students to complete as many activities as they would like throughout the month. Grids will be given at the beginning of the month and should be returned by the end of the month.
